a letter to my boy

Dear B,

Today you are thirty eight weeks old. I'm not even sure how that's possible.

Some people celebrate something like "Longer Out Than In Day" - the time that comes when you've officially been a part of the bright shiny world longer than you were in my tummy. It's hard to count how long you were officially in my tummy, because your due date changed a few times, but we'll call it 40 weeks and 4 days. You're close enough, and I'm choosing today, your 38 week birthday, to celebrate your Longer Out Than In Day.

Thirty eight weeks ago, at 1:06pm, you looked like this:

And now, my sweet lovebug, you have turned into a monster-sized kid. You look like this:

Quite often, as you sit on my lap, or lay on my shoulder, I think about how big you've gotten - I can't remember what it was like when you were 1/3 the size you are now. It doesn't seem possible that you were ever able to fit in my belly.

I try to memorize you exactly as you are now. The way your hair is really finally starting to fill in and how spikey and fluffy it is all over. Your piercing blue eyes. The way your cheeks flush from teething or being out in the cold. How big your hands are - not the length of your fingers, just the width of your palms. They seem fit for a 3 year old. How you strrrreeeeeeeetttttchhhhh when we wake you up in the morning, like a bear coming out of his winter hibernation. The way you look with two bottom teeth because I know the top teeth are just about to make their presence known. The way you clap for ev-ery-thing you do - you are so very proud of your accomplishments!

You are all but a toddler. You've got the army crawl down pat, but you only use one arm to propel you forward and the other kind of drags you along. We think you might be a lefty like your daddy. You shed your helpless infant title long ago. When you want something you let us know. Loudly. But you're happy as a clam 95% of the day. You still keep late hours for someone under the age of 13... you're up till 9:30 pm and get up at 6:30 am. We love this about you though, it means you have extra play time with us after we all get home from work/daycare. I don't want to think about the days you require bed at 7pm. You nap so much better than you used to. Usually if you're cuddled in with your puppy blanket, you doze right off.

Peanut, I'm realizing how fast this is going and try as I might, I can't stop time. It goes without saying how much you've blessed us these last 38 weeks. I cannot remember what life was like before you. Some day, sooner than later, you're going to be SO over your mom and dad. I'm sure you'll think we are just not cool. :) So for now, I will cherish your big smoochable head, and your dimpled cheeks. We'll let you sleep on our shoulders as we face the world.

I love you, lovebug.
